KCCJ (Emirates Stadium)
KCCJ has established a national reputation for service delivery and have expanded into markets in Europe and Ireland – involving some of the world’s leading foodservice organisations. Their range of services provides end users with a source for design, procurement and project management.
“We first used CCS for The Emirates, Arsenal Stadium project, this incidentally was the biggest catering contract awarded in the UK at eight million pounds, so one that we were immensely proud of. I was aware of CCS as we had spoken to their sales team previously. I felt that they would be suited to this particular project due to their experience and capabilities. Of course it was risky working with a new company on such an important project but CCS more than proved themselves and so we moved forward with them.” Kevin Slatter is Managing Director of KCCJ Ltd, catering services specialists.

Can you tell me a bit about KCCJ?
Basically we specialise in the design, planning and the installation of catering facilities, these vary from small to large scale projects such as the fabrication of metal work surfaces to just a single refrigeration unit. We work really closely with our clients’ right from the start of a project to establish their requirements and objectives and work with them closely to achieve them. Therefore you could say we coordinate the project and we would then contract someone like CCS as refrigeration experts for a certain aspect of the project.
Do CCS carry out all the refrigeration work?
Yes as a company we work in two main areas; one is general work which tend to be smaller scale projects such as hotels and restaurants. We also use CCS for all the larger projects and in particular the stadium projects where we may need up to fifteen men on site. Projects to date include the 02 Dome, Wembley Arena and the Emirates Stadium which is an incredible project. CCS have such a wide range of skills that we can also use them for additional related work which is great. You could say we act as project managers and CCS link exceptionally well with us. They offer the complete package and enable us to fulfil our obligation to clients. We feel that CCS have all the expertise KCCJ require for larger projects.

So what sort of additional work have CCS carried out?
All sorts really but one particular example that springs to work that puts the gas into the soft drinks; this was a huge project that involved a mile of pipe work . CCS were familiar with the project and had the skills for the job so it made sense for them to do the work. We knew they had the experience and skills to do this and they did the same with the pipes that the stadium’s run the beer through. CCs also have capabilities so they supplied and installed all the lighting and electical sockets in the beer cellars.
How did you come across CCS initially?
We first used CCS for The Emirates, Arsenal Stadium project, this incidentally was the biggest catering contract awarded in the UK at eight million pounds, so one that we were immensely proud of. I was aware of CCS as we had spoken to their sales team previously. I felt that they would be suited to this particular project due to their experience and capabilities. Of course it was risky working with a new company on such an important project but CCS more than proved themselves and so we moved forward with them.
Working together on such large scale projects have you had any problems?
The Arsenal Stadium was an exceptional project for both KCCJ and CCS, one that was incredible to be involved with and, as with the 02 Dome; there was a lot of money spent on refrigeration, around seven hundred thousand pounds. Obviously with any large project issues arise along the way so it is important for us to work with a company that can solve these issues. CCS are very disciplined and if they say they will do something then I know they will do it. I can’t tell you how refreshing it is to work with such a company. CCS use their initiative which is vital when working on such large projects and this links well with us.

Do CCS work to your deadlines?
The 02 Arena project had a very tight deadline and to meet it CCS worked all week, the weekends and even through the night to complete the job. As a business they are able to draw in resources and are flexible in their style of operation which is vital due to the nature of our work.
Do they handle your maintenance too?
Yes – they do a level of staff training and the stadiums have what they call ‘ramp- up’ events where they demonstrate fire and evacuation procedures so CCS attend these. They have someone on standby at the events for any possible queries. We were approached by Arsenal as to who they should use for maintenance and we suggested CCS, having supplied the system they obviously know it well. We also felt confident that they were more than capable of supporting the maintenance. In fact I’m currently proposing them for the 02 Dome maintenance contract too.
Do you ever go back to the market and look for new refrigeration suppliers?
I think its good practice to checks and make sure your suppliers are competitive, it’s just something you have to keep abreast with, and the nature of the market means that price always has to be competitive. We go to CCS due to their level of expertise so if we had an issue with their price, rather than look elsewhere, we have a relationship where we can just go back to them and ask them to look at their price and improve it if they feel it’s achievable. Our primary concern is expertise and naturally this comes at a price.
It sounds like you have built up a solid working relationship with CCS?
Yes- I’d say we have, CCS have very substantial technical knowledge and due to the nature of the projects we work on we need their professionalism. We need to work with companies that offer the highest levels of professionalism and knowledge hence the reason we work with CCS. They make things happen, which is very important for us with demanding deadlines, not to mention our reputation as a business. When asked to rise to the occasion they always do.
